HOUSE of ADDITION

The main objective of this project’s brief was to design a mixed-use tall building inspired by the urban, environmental, and socio/cultural aspects of its setting. Kampung Bharu is a privilege by its location which is situated in the middle of KL, besides the golden triangle. This privilege shouldn’t belong explicitly to Kampung Bharu but it should belong to KL, Malaysians and every Malaysian should have access to his privilege. Although Kampung Bharu is strategic in location, its development is relatively retarded with poor facilities and infrastructure which cause the original residents to resettle elsewhere, close to the city with a more comfortable home. The intention of this project is to bring back the original residents of kampong Bharu as well as inviting outsiders to stay in Kampung Bharu, creating multicultural, more homogenous, and dynamic in terms of culture, activity, and tradition.

The proposed site is located along Jalan Hassan Salleh beside LRT station. It is also facing Akleh highway, where the highway acts as a barrier making Kampung Bharu feeling ‘excluded ‘from the city center. The new proposed promenade not only beautifies the riverside but also breaks down the solid wall blocking the historical Klang River, increasing the permeability together with the proposed Saloma Link, which links our site to KLCC, making Kampung Bharu a step closer to the city center.

House of addition is housing suitable for all ages, a place to learn and earn in terms of knowledge and investment as an outcome. The design scheme of having the permanent and addition units is to make the house more affordable, cater to future expansion; allowing people to buy now built later. Using modular design for the additional units helps to reduce the construction cost and time as the materials which are the concrete panels, window panels, and door panels can be carried in a truck and construct within a week, with 3-4 workers, even the owner can involve themselves in the process. The additional units are built on the steel structure prepared during the construction of the permanent units.

Live, the rental scheme for a temporary period, not only address and expand the privilege of the Kampung Bharu residence to attract them to come back and stay in Kampung Bharu, but also invite out comers to come and stay or for investment. For the rental scheme, 60 % of the housing will be on a normal market rate for kampong Bharu residence and 40% of the housing will be owned by DBKL and PKB to rent or sell the units to outsiders for a period of 5 – 10 years. After 10 years, they have to sell back to DBKL or PKB, PKB will earn from the rental and to be used for the maintenance, to reduce the residence burden on maintenance fee. This scheme does not only expands the privileges of Kampung Bharu residence but also tackles the issue of singularity in Kampung Bharu as it opens to outsiders creating multicultural, more homogenous, and dynamic in terms of culture, activity, and tradition.

Learn, the podium where the residence and public, is the place where the training and interactive learning will be held, providing a platform for entrepreneurs, engaging academic environment for learning and knowledge exchange from the public or the residence. It will be a teach, learn, exchange mood for the public, and also the residence.

Lastly, earn, in terms of knowledge-wise, through the informal learning, a residence can gain new skills, through teaching, sharing or learning, gaining entrepreneur skills, as well as expanding own networking whereas in terms of financial wise, buying a unit on a land situated within the city center of KL, which is convenient to go for work, play and leisure is a kind of investment either to buy or rent.
